I have a 1999 C280 Sport, I have noticed that there is an "airbag off" for the passenger airbag in the center console. Now, I suppose that this is for when no one is seating the airbag turns itself off, should this light "airbag off" be on whenever nobody is seating in the passenger seat? Because mine just turns on for a couple of seconds whenever I turn on the car.

Another question, I also noticed 3 buttons under the rearview mirror, I suppose they are for opening the garage door.... if so, how do I program them to use with my garage door?

Do you have an owner's manual? "The front passenger air bag deploys only if the front passenger seat is occupied and the 'air bag off' indicator lamp is not illuminated" pg. 58 So, yes, it s/b on until you have a passenger up front. Do you carry any heavy objects in the front passenger seat? This could fool the system and turn the light off.
For programing the garage door opener, go to pgs., 81-82. (Too much info to copy, but yes, the three buttons on the bottom side of the rear view are for the garage doors.)

Thanks! I do not carry anything on the seat, so I do not know if this is working as it should because the "airbag off" light is always off either if someone is seated in the passenger seat or not.

Also, do you know if there is somewhere online where I could download the owners manual?

Up until this year, you could download one from MB. However, since the '99's are now 7 years old, the only way to get one from MB is to order a hard copy one. I have no idea the price, but it couldn't be too much.
According to the MBUSA web site you may order by phone at 1-800-FOR-MERCEDES (1-800-367-6372)

Other than that I don't know what to tell you.

 

I hadn't noticed before, but mine operates the same. I stopped by the dealer yesterday and this is the normal operation for the "airbag on/off". It comes on at start up and then goes out. If you had a passenger, it wouldn't come on. The bottom line is that if your air bag systems are malfunctioning, the red "SRS" dash light will come on. Sorry for the bad info: I made an incorrect inference from the owners manual description.
