Default '97 C280 repairs catch 22

My check engine light has been on and off for 1.5 years. I've had three different mechanics tell me three different things, and all quote the repairs at $1,000 or above. One says the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced, the other says it's the car's computer that needs replacing, and the third says something else.

On top of that I have an oil leak, which will run $1000 to repair.

And I noticed last night my car was running 10 degrees hotter than usual and when I shut off the engine this morning, there was gurguling sound coming from the tiop of the engine which stopped after a few minutes. My current mechanic says, 'bring it in, it may be a temperature gauge or water flow problem and you don't want to over heat the car'.

The car only has 90k miles.

What do you all think? Should I go ahead with these repairs which may or may not fix problems? What do you advise as the next action I should take?
