1995 C220 - I need convincing
I am looking at a 1995 C220 with 110 000 miles on the clock. It has a complete MB dealer service history and the interior / exterior is in excellent ++ condition. I have never owned a Mercedes before and although it drives very smoothly I have no idea what to look for. Is this a lot of miles for a car like that. Is there any major issues onces a Mercedes gets to this age.
Any advice / opinions on this model appreciated.
Cheers

I'd like to say that all Mercedes over the past 16 years were as renowned for reliability as those of old; but that is not the case. It is true that any Mercedes is going to use far better parts than the average car, but some of the designs and electronics over this period have been less than stellar. The long and short of it is you need to research each model individually. (Which is what you are doing now.) Other thoughts: I wouldn't be afraid of the mileage. If that car was a good design and well maintained, it will last many more miles. What to look for? I would certainly have the car checked by a disinterested Mercedes shop. Not necessarily a dealer, but someone knowledge. I'd pay to have that done right; perhaps as much as $200.
Good luck.
BTW, I purchased a 1999 C280 about a year ago and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

I have one, and. I have had no problems at all. I commute 40 miles a day. I was hit on the freeway going 60 miles and walked away fine. Mine has 119 K and I took it my local dealer they said just maintain it. I pay the 100 for the oil change and they do a diagnostic.

110,000 isnt that much, my 99 C280 had 85000 and that is pretty low. Also it is a Mercedes, how bad can you go. The only thing is that mantience is high but for me it has been very much and i have had no problems. Just make sure you take care of it.

I owned a 1993 FORD ESCORT LX, it's true that the maintenance was cheaper than my 95 C220 I have now, but the Escort gave me a lot touble and I had to get it fixed all the time, it costed me much more annually than my C220.

I have a 1995 c220 that I bought 2 years ago at 80,000 kms and it has now done 110,000 kms.The gearbox thumped between first and second gear when I bought it but the dealer paid to fix that.Apparently it was only a minor adjustment and I have had no further trouble with gearbox.I had to replace the flexible coupling between gearbox and drive shaft recently but that is the only trouble I have had. My wife uses the car for her daily commute of about 55 ks and gets 8 litres to the hundred ks (about 35 miles per imperial gallon. On a recent trip of 650 kms which included going over 3 mountain passes,2 over 3000feet and one just under 3000 feet fuel use was 7.5 litres per 100 ks(about 37-38 miles per imperial gallon)I did not try to break any speed records but I did not dawdle either. My average speed for the trip was about 80 kph which included 4 toilet stops. The c220 may not have the get up and go that the bigger engines have but it is fast enough for me and the comfort is exceptional.I have done the mountain trip many times over the years in a variety of cars but none could compare with the Mercedes.I keep the car well maintained with regular servicing and hope to get many years of use out of it.
