If you go to a dealer they cannot even begin to help you unless you give them the VIN. This is really true with older cars from before 1980 when a mid-year change in a part was not abnormal. It is not enough to say it is a 1975 230 with a four cylinder gas. It is not even enough to say it is a 115.11512. Without the last few numbers, the chassis numbers, you might not get the right part.
As far as getting the VIN in order to make a key so you can steal the car: The VIN on US cars is visible through the windshield.

If you have a european car you have to subscribe to the full version.
The epc doesn't really show you exactly where the part is located either, unless you know what the part does and what parts group it's in you might not ever find it.
I have been selling MB parts for 20 + years and still have a hard time finding things.
