My buddies dad has a 89260e and we where wondering if we can put a carb on this car. Its for enduro dirt racing and we want to free up as much weight as possible and that intake looks like we could free up some weight there by putting a carb on it. If a carb fits what year model merc. has a carb on it. I am a mechanic but a noob to merc. any help would be appreciated. thanks

I would imagine you can get a carb set up for this as Mercedes sells cars all over the world and while all of the cars we get here are Fuel Injected ones. I know some cars in Euro trim or in South America have carbs. Make sure you get a set of manifolds off the same type of engine as you have or it might not fit under the hood.
You might find a Euro set up in a wrecking yard on a Gray Market car. Mercedes used to use two four bbl Solex carbs which can easily be replaced with Webers. I have also seen Stromberg sidedrafts which are the best type of carb for this sort of thing except that they cost about $800 each.
Mercedes normally uses two three cylinder intakes instead of one six cylinder intake so thermal expansion will not stress the cylinder head.
You might contact a company that sells Weber carbs and see if they have a package deal they can sell you. They would also be able to advise you on how to properly jet the carbs for the type of track you are planning on running on.
You might also need to change the cam as carb cams and FI cams normally have a different profile.
Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Now as for locating the intake manifold/s and cam and maybe a carb or we could just go with a weber. Is there any places where they have old piles of these for sale? Going to the one junkyard tomorrow see the selection of merc and bmws for me that is. Should I post a new thread for these parts. I appreciate your help Sam thanks.
