Default Variable heat

My 1981SD 300 has a heater problem. If I’m running on level ground at a constant speed, the heater works fine if I pull a serious hill or slow down for an intersection, the heater goes away. I can turn the fan onto high and let it run for a couple minutes and then hit the auto switch and the heater comes back. What am i missing about this problem?

Start with the coolant level and system bleeding. Make sure the cooling system is full and free of air pockets. Check the auxiliary water pump. If it’s not running or is weak, replace it. Inspect and potentially rebuild the monovalve. These are known weak points in older Mercedes vehicles. Test the climate control system. Look for vacuum issues or sensor malfunctions. If all else fails, check for blockages in the heater core that might restrict coolant flow during certain conditions.

Particular attention should be paid to vacuum systems and sensors, as their malfunctions can manifest themselves in the form of ineffective operation of the climate control system.
