Towing while car is on "Parking"
Hi everyone !
I've had this problem last weekend- I have 98 E320 my electronic Key broke down, so I couldn't start my car and I couldn't do anything, so I called towing to take it to my house...
Since the key didn't work, I couldn't even put the shift **** on "Neutral" so the towing started to pull my car from the back on the flat bed.... while they were doing it the rear wheel was shaking but not spinning....
Same thing was when they were loading the car off the flat bed....
Could they mess up my transmission ??? I ordered a new key and untill I start the car I won't be able to know... Help me out please... can't sleep at night

that's not good! [sm=badidea.gif]
if they tow it not exceeding 80km/h or 50m/h, then it will be okay.
why not push a pen on the shift lock and shift it to "P"????
it's on the user's manual.

No ! they didn't drive it on the road ! They placed it on the flat bed (all 4 wheels on the bed) but while they were placing it there, the wheels were locked on "P"... so rear wheels were kind of shaking !!! It seemed like the wheel wants to turn, but some mechanism places it back to previous position...
I was looking for this spot where you can push the button and shift the ****.... but I don't have it... maybe they don't dothis for 98 E320 which go to USA

It's okay. Car thieves do that all the time.
Actually, as long as the wheels didn't turn, everything should be okay. Nothing broke if they didn't turn. Just wore a little rubber off of each rear tire in one spot. It would have been better and safer to unlock the trans, but poop happens and life goes on.

then the rear housing of the transmission will be broken or the spline of the shaft where the gear goes in will give out.
but since you got rear differential, it is most likely that it will turn the other wheel into opposite direction to compensate with the other one's movement.

Just tell me what do you think from a mechanicatl point of view - is it possible that they messed up transmission ???
And if they did, how is it going to look like (e.g. hard shifting, slipping gears....) ???
