Default Starting issue

I have a problem. I know I have some glow light issues. For one, they won't come on when I start my car (I have a diesel) but will come on later for a few seconds after the car has started. However, my big problem is that I have to put the car in neutral and then back into park BEFORE it will start. Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem? I would appreciate it. Thank.

I have an '89 190D, 2.5 (non turbo). I really like my car, but I can't figure out what the problem is, I spoke to my mechanic, but due to him being so busy, he hasn't gotten back to me yet. I didn't want to continue driving it if it damages the transmission or starter in any way. Thank you for your reply.

i had one of these.if you have to move the gear lever to crank the engine its more than likely it.it has a 5 or 6 pin connector on the left side of the gearbox.
