Speedometer, and other stuff...

Okay, I guess I've proven my ineptitude! I took out the speedometer, had it sent to a VDO repair place ($183.00) and put it back in and it doesn't work! It appears I may have dropped, and lost, some kind of "adapter" that must slide onto the end of the speedo cable???? The cable doesn't appear to reach into the speedo head to engage and drive the speedo unit. Anybody know if my assumption is correct? And, if it is an adapter, is it something available through NAPA, or the like?

New Business: I drove the car up to snowy and cold NW Pennsylvania as my Mom had taken a fall and needed surgery. I couldn't get enough heat out of the heater to keep warm...engine temp never went above 170, so I tried putting cardboard in front of the radiator...didn't help much. I'm guessing the previous owner may have removed the thermostat. Anybody agree? Never had a problem getting heat in North Carolina!
