Speedometer needle fault on '00 CL 500

I would greatly appreciate any advice you guys can give me for the following problem please;
'00 CL 500 - bought it a few weeks ago and travelled 2500 miles since purchase - all was well.
The other day, I was travelling at about 70mph and slowing down as I approached a town when I noticed the speedo needle climbing and holding at 80mph.
Continued on the journey and by the time I had reach my destination, the needle was at 160mph. And the car was stopped!
I got home, inserted two keys and pulled the instrument panel out. Pulled the lead out of the back and left it for 10 minutes. Put the lead back in and the speedo needle went back to zero.
I thought all was well.
Next day...travelled about 5 miles and all was working normally. Then the needle suddenly 'froze' and started to climb once again, despite the fact that I was only travelling at about 40mph.
It remained at almost max reading until I pulled the plug out again and left it for 10 minutes. It then reset itself.
Now it is happening ever 2 miles or so.
It's driving me nuts. (As you could imagine).
Please - are there any suggestions? Some people suggest that the car has been clocked? Other say that it is just a dodgy instrument panel...
I would greatly appreciate any advice.
Thank you, Rory
