Default Source for spare key

I recently purchased a 2000 Mercedes E320 that came with a single key. I would like to purchase an additional key for my wife, however the dealer cost for this was $215. Is this the only source, or is there a competitive source other than the dealer for this?

You might call around to different dealers in your area. The price on replacement keys has been known to vary from dealer to dealer.

Hi,
eBay but be aware that the key will require"coding" that will cost further.
I bet your dealer didn't include this in his 215USD.
If it did include coding seems to be the "going" rate.
Does your insurance cover a "lost" key?

Thanks... I was able to find a key on eBay for $20... now I am going to feel royally ripped off if Mercedes charges me $200 to "code" it.

Ok... you can buy the key for $15, which means they probably pick them up for $5... and charge you $200+ because they can.

Nice profit margin for them... not particularly customer friendly, IMO. In fact, leaves a bit of a bad taste.

My words would be a little more ACID.
Lets see hopw you get on with the coding since I'm sure this would have been charged EXTRA for the same reasons!

Really,
Not the case here although dealers always like to make the profit on the parts AS WELL.
Why?
It's not technical so long as the key is good.
Can't think why its commercial since aas I stated they charge for the coding.
MB are careful with respect to security issues especially in the UK (Keys/speedo packs etc) since this helps to maintain residual values but if they do the job the details are recorded.
Puzzled.
