Smoke pours from under dash!
Hi; '86 420 SEL: finally made a shakedown cruise this afternoon: 75 miles one-way. About 20 miles into the trip, smoke started pouring from underneath the drivers' side of the instrument panel;smelled like wiring burning (you know the smell);I turned the air conditioining off and it stopped immediately. A/C had not been working exactly right: sometimes wants to heat and cool at the same time; the "Low" position for the blower speed doesn't work (system seems to always be in "automatic" when on); sometimes heat comes from the defroster even when the system is "off". Strange. I completed the trip with no other problems (this is probably enough problem to keep me busy for a while). Any troubleshooting ideas will help. regards.

Smoke pours from under dash!
Checked air conditioning out this afternoon; worked pretty good, no smoke, could not find any burned wiring under dash, the only thing I really see wrong is there is no "high" or "low" blower function, only "automatic", which isn't the end of the world (it has been like this for some time now, and this did not change during the production of all the smoke). I noticed the outside temperature indicatoris nowcompletely dead; it was working before but the display had lost some of the cells in the liquid-crystal display so it was pretty useless. I think this thing failed and caused all the smoke; I will be pulling it next chance I get. I will also be getting a CO2 fire extinguisher to carry along.
