Shocks on 97 E420 a DIY project?
My E420 has 111,000 miles and still rides great, but I am assuming it would benefit from new shocks with that kind of mileage on them.
Was planning on going with Bilstein (any other suggestions?) and was wondering if there is anything out of the ordinary to change the four of them myself.
I'v changed shocks on American cars/trucks, but not a Mercedes.
Ideas?
Thanks

Thanks. I was hoping that wasn't the case. I'm a little leary of using the spring compressor, especially since I don't have a lift. With my other change outs I was able to use a small floor jack to compress the shock for removal.

you can rent a spring compressor temporarily from different auto parts stores. I'd really suggest you use one. I've personally been hit by one of those springs when I was younger and it broke 3 ribs.
It really doesn't matter if you don't have a lift. It's best to compress the spring once the mcpherson assymbly is out of the car anyway. Then you can take off the top cap and replace the strut. Just do one at a time. Also having an impact gun makes the process go way faster if you have access to one.

I hear ya. My dad years ago almost got it right in the face by a compressedspring. Instead, it missed him and cracked a block wall that was behind him.
That's why I'm weary. I think I'll give this job to the local mechanic.
Thanks for your help!
