Default Oil Filter Won't Budge!

I bought my 1991 190E 2.6 last fall and stored it for the winter. Now I have it out of storage and want to change the oil etc. The oil filter will not come off. I have the correct wrench size but it just slips. I also tried the band type wrench but it just won't budge. Any suggestions?

Hi,
This is crude and brutal but worked for me! (Provided you don't want to use the filter again).

Hammer a flat-head screw driver all the way through the filter and use it to unscrew the filter.

Please take necessary precautions before you proceed. Some OIL may drain out of the filter so place a pan beneath the filter as well.

Good LUCK.

Exactly, what I have done. It works.
It will make a torn sharp mess of the filter.

Maybe it was overtightened; not so tight next time.
Also check that the engine is not overheating; sometimes that will make the seal stick.

I would suggest a good quality band type wrench with a square drive for a ratchet, you can use a pipe on the ratchet for more leverage. Also there is a Wide nylon strap wrench from Snap-on tools that has boath 3/8" & 1/2" square drives,( I have literally twisted filter housings before they came loose with one of these ! ) Good luck.

I have seen the screw driver tactic also it works however u might want to tap on it slightly b4 resorting to the stabing of the filter.

Yeah, but stabbing the filter feels great after busting a knuckle...How will you top that? lol

And there is the "I beat the stuck filter dance" around the garage trash can.

Well of course it's a battle of will, and an escalation of severity.

The hierarchy of tooling as follows:

1) The proper tool.
2) The proper tool with a cheater bar.
3) pipe wrench
4) pipe wrench, cheater bar.
5) hammer
6) abrasive cut-off wheel
7) cutting torch
8) dynomite
