no compression

RE: no compression
Sounds like the classic: catalytic convertor plugged up, or some other sort of restriction in the exhaust system.
In such cases, the engine will run fine but will have severely limited power output.
Hope this is what the problem is (almost anything else is going to be $$$)

Assuming the transmission is not slipping 9i.e. engine running away without moving car):
Check to see if little beasties have plugged the exhaust with a nest; check air intake; check for stale gasoline (get rid of it); check/change fuel filter; check fuel pumps (correct pressure, etc.)
Check ignition for cutting out under high load (as load increases, firing pressure increases and the potential for ignition failure increases, etc.).
Check the easy/cheap/obvious stuff first.
if the convertor is plugged, engine will idle fine and run OK at light loads, but will rapidly run out of breath when loaded and/or run at higher speeds (due to the air flow being restricted).
It could have a worn timing chain; may have already jumped a link or two (Danger Will Robinson; this will wreck the engine fast. Be sure to check the timing chain and tensioner on a high-mileage engine). Check ignition timing.
