Default my first mercedes question (1986 transmission issue)

Hello all,

Ihave been a big Jeep guy ever sinceI got my license (about 3 years ago haha), but recently i have been interested in finding a deisel something to convert to run on veggie oil.

I'm currently in college, but my mom found me a 1986 mercedes 300d non-turbo that i can get for FREE!

Apparantly it has a problem with the transmission however... it an auto.

From whatI have been told, its finr up until about 30 mph, then it decides to shift into neutral on its own. the previous owner took it to a garage and they told him he needed a new transmission... im really hoping that its a broken vacum line or wire or something.

Does anyone have any advice as to where i should start looking when i get my hands on it? is this a common problem?

thanks in advance
-Justin

Hi Justin,

I think the tranny probably needs an overhaul. The tranny has clutches on the inside, and when those wear-out it has to come apart. You might be able to find a used or rebuilt tranny; repair parts are also still available from Mercedes. Are the body and interior in good condition? Is the car worth fixing? Blue

Ibelieve it has the 5 cylinder engine, which i have heard arent so great aparantly?

i'm not sure if this is a realistic goal, but i would like to put no more than 500 bucks into this car to get it running (i do all my own work, so no labor costs.)

Is this the kind of kit i need?

Or is it likely i will need more parts?

Also, is there a class-specific forum i should post this in?

thanks

hi justin just thought i'd stick my 2 cents worth in. if you feel the car is worth fixing here is another option, replace trans with a used one.if you use a J/Y [auto recycler] try to pick your doner that has been wrecked or apparent eng damage re hole in block etc.as this helps your odds on trans beingusable, as it was running up till the end. keep in mind this is still a gamble as the 1 you install may be a twin to the 1 you removed .look at atf is it clean or mud? that naturally aspired eng is slow on take off but with regular oil & filter changes will run a long time. also there a lot of after market parts available here in the states should you decide to fix what you have regards bng

Justin, If you don't take that car, someone else certainly will.
I bet a scrub brush and some soap would have that engine compartment looking great in no time. Also a buff and wax on the paint and you have a nice car.

Justin, have you ever overhauled a tranny before? The tranny is the unltimate mechanic's challenge. Theyhave approx 4000 pieces, and if you forget oneor put one in upside down, its dead. Blue
