Misbehaving Benz
This group's archive saved ne a lot of money recently. I found some archived entries that explained how to fix my cold-starting problem and ABS failure by replacing one 10-amp fuse. I was getting ready to replace the cold-start valve until reading these entries. So now I'm finally getting around to joining.
I have a 1992 190e 2.3 with 141K. It's my first 190 and third MB. My wife drives a 2000 ML 320 with 90K.
The 190 is a bit temperamental, though I've put 180 miles on it this week without a single burp. (Knock on wood)
The engine usually runs like a clock and uses no oil. Every once in a while it bogs down on the highway and (rarely) stalls round town. Sometimes it's hard to restart when this happens. I've also noticed that when going down a long hill on the highway it surges just a bit, as if the cruise control were on. (The cruise control doesn't work at all, actually.)
The car cold-starts easily, but sometimes you have to goose the accelerator to keep it running, and it won't hold a steady RPM until warm. It's much better since I replaced the burned-out 10-amp fuse in the cold start/ABS relay. The ABS works now, too.
Sometimes, after a long drive, the engine idles in Park higher than it should, around 1,500 rpm.
I haven't taken this to a mechanic because the symptoms occur too
infrequently, and I don't want to go down the track of replacing parts
until I get the right one by process of elimination.
Years ago I had a Volvo 740 that displayed some of these symptoms and
it turned out to be the anti-knock sensor. I spent an absurd amount of
money on incorrect diagnoses. Turned out a $60 part solved the problem
for good.
This is my first 190e so likely culprits don't come readily to mind. I
would welcome any suggestions.
