Default Mercedes ML 320 summer vs winter

I bought my car from a private owner that said there is some switch or lever in the engine that has to be moved from hot weather to cold weather. I've never heard of such a thing and can't find anything about it on the Web. I tried to use my defrost for the first time and it's just blowing cold air and he said that's why. Does anyone know about this lever? It's a 1999 ML 320

If you can post a picture of the engine bay we might be able to see it and point it out for you. Depending on what he did to it, we should be able to figure out what needs to be repaired/replaced to restore correct automatic operation.
Yeah, there are A/C issues. It worked when I first got it for about 2 months. He told me he just had it charged a couple months prior. So that sounds feasible. I'll try and get a picture for you. Thanks for the reply.
