key won't turn in my 98 c class

The key in mine wouldn't turn at all one day. Just like your situation it would unlock or lock the doors but would not turn the ignition. Took it to the dealer and they told me the ignition switch had froze up and needed replaced. Expensive part and cost to install total cost me $380. Good luck... I wish these cars didn't cost so much for parts.

ignition problem
Did you ever resolve your ignition problem?
I have the same problem with my 99 E430. I replaced the battery since the service rep at the dealer told me it was a battery problem, however, it still doesn't start and I can't move the key at all while in the ignition.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I did have the issue resolved. I took my car to a local mechanic who had to order a new ignition. Mercedes sent him a new ignition and key that matches my old one. I would've done it myself but I didn't feel confident that I could do it without damaging more parts because the mechanic told me the whole dash had to come out and it was a pain in the a$$. This is the first and ONLY car I've ever owned where the ignition gave out.
