Ok, so I get in my 1982 Mercedes 300 SD this morning, insert the key in the ignition, and it won't turn. I remove the key several times and reinsert it, but it just won't turn at all. It's like it is stuck. I had to take my other car to work. Anyone seen anything like this before?

 

Is the steering wheel just bound up with the steering wheel lock? Have you tried turning the steering wheel a little bit in both directions while trying to turn the key? Use a bit of force.

 

yes try turning the wheel back and forth while inserting key.

if not you problay need a new lock tumbler and its going to have to be cut out

 

That's what my mechanic told me. I am hoping I can get the key to turn one more time, and if I do, I'm going straight to my mechanic and he can fix it. If I can't get the key to turn, I'm going to have to get it drilled and a new lock tumbler installed.

 

If you get the key to turn one last time u won't have to drill it to get it removed. They make a special tool for Mercedes to remove the tumbler.

I have had same problem on a 1989 W124 260 E. The keys tend to wear with time. I just ordered a new key by chassis number from my MB dealer and it fitted perfectly. Cost about £10 much less than a new lock. Obvious question have you tried the spare key or Chauffer key if you have one.

 

I had this problem with the 79 450SLC I bought recently I cured it with graphite dust into the ignition. works fine now.
