Has anyone else experienced this? 1997 W210 117K mi.
While set in the 'door operation" switch position, the interior lights are turning on and (eventually) off at random both while driving and while parked in the garage in the middle of the night. Opening and closing the doors does not seem to stop this. Turning the switch to off seems to be effective to make night driving safe.

I'm thankful for any ideas you may have.

Problem diagnosed... that was quick, for anyone who may experience this in the future here's the situation.
On first examination of the door switch contacts everything seemed in order but on closer inspection the switch on the driver door was damaged (probably from slamming the door with the metal part of the seat belt between the door and the switch). The ears of the black plastic switch housing were no longer gripping the steel door frame. But with a little re-positioning it is now rigid enough to depress the spring within the switch and turn the lights off. What a relief!
