Instrument cluster lights in 96SL500
I had the ocassion to drive home after dark the other night and my instrument panel lights failed to work. This is the first this has happened. I checked the fuses the next day and the one that controls the instrument panel controls other functions which all continue to operate. On this car the rheostat that controls the dimming of the instrument lights also resets the trip odometer. I did get fuel the day before and reset the trip "O". I didn't drive that night. Any ideas or suggestions?
RESOLUTION: Finally took vehicle to shop and paid the labor dollars to trace the problem. Found a frayed wire that was shorting out under the console below the unused ashtray and lighter. Wire was repaired, instrument cluster reinstalled as was the console and everything works fine. Hope other don't have to spend 4 hours for labor to find a problem that should never occur. I'm questioning the real quality of this car.
