Default Hi. Need a Merc expert... EFI tech

Hello, all.

I am thinking of trying to fit a coil-on-plug, distributorless ignition setup on my 240z using megasquirt + sensors from perhaps a Mercedes engine. What I need to know at this stage is, when did Mercedes start using this? Which models should I be looking for? I spied on my father's 300CE-24 that there was no dizzy, and no HT leads, so I'm guessing his car is coil-on-plug. Also, I need to know how the computer knows when to fire; whether there is a cam angle sensor and where it is located.

I noticed in the trading post a front half-cut from a '93 300SE w140... could I use this for parts?

Thanks for any help...

Hi,
I admire your enthusiasm!
Yes everything is possible and you will learn a lot in the process I promise you.
Problem will be finding a distributorless ignition system that isn't integrated with lots of other electronic gizmos.
In simple terms if you move the whole electronics system (ignition and fuelling) to a different engine the system should still work BUT....!
However, unless you can source a system which is ignition only then you will run into all sorts of fuelling issues which will change engine to engine.
Electronic systems are great but I suspect that you may be better off settling for the standard distributor system and ensuring that it is 100% effective.
After all distributors and separate coils were used for many years before the advent of electronic systems.

Ask yourself the question....What do you hope to gain by undertaking this project.
0.001% improvement in power/fuel consumption not worth the effort!
How electronic systems work?.....Mmmmm...I guess you will be an expert by the time you get it working (properly).
I wish you luck.

Hi, Stuart!

You're probably right about not gaining much power going to dizzyless ignition. I originally was just thinking of using megasquirt to control fuel, since triple carbs are *so* expensive, and hard to run when cold. I'm running older style bosch L-jetronic on another, almost identical engine, but the airflow meter is a huge flow restriction, so I wanted to change to a MAS, and the only systems that use that also require a crank angle sensor, so given that, I might as well use a megasquirt system instead of the stock computer... then I was ensnared by talk about using a megasquirt II, to take care of spark as well using Ford EDIS... then the "while-I'm-at-it" bug bit me again and I started thingking about coil-on-plug... Why did I really start thinking about electronic ignition? Hmm. That's a good one... I don't clearly remember. I was probably just pissed off at taking apart my distributor last week to find the vacuum advance in peices. :-P

Also, at 10.5:1+ compression, I'm paranoid about pinging.

Thanks for your advice. Maybe I'll read up a bit more about how expensive the two megasquirt systems are, and what they require...

Hey guys new here i own a Merc 230 CE 1989 and am looking to find out about a Exhaust Manifold and front pipe for this car and need to find out whether the parts are the same as a 230 E from the ordinary saloon version, as its proving very hard to locate parts for the 230 Coupe. Also does anyone know where to get parts anywhere for this type of car, need parts also for electric seatbelt enclosure.Donegal, ireland
