Default have to fix injection pump on '81 300sd, what are my options?

Ok, here's the deal-

I acquired a 1981 300sd for $1200 (seemed like a great deal). It had some smoking issues and was very sluggish, but it seemed OK. Eventually the glow plugs and alternator pooped out, and the smoking issue was becoming quite unbearable for other drivers.

I replaced the alternator, and had a mechanic do the rest. He replaced the glow plugs, glow plug relay, and did a valve adjustment, since it was clear that it had been tampered with by the previous owner (perhaps to compensate for the faulty injection pump). He said that the only way to restore its power, fuel economy, and prevent smoking was to rebuild the injection pump.

As many of you may know, this is a very expensive process. Today I ordered a diesel purge kit and new fuel filters, hoping that it may be able to clean the pump without taking it apart. Will this help?

Also, I've found a few used pumps for cheap on a website called iOffer.com, but the website doesn't seem legit. Has anyone heard of a good way to get a used pump?
