Default Fuel Tank Vacuum???? 85 300D

I'm new to mercedes and diesels, so new that as of the time of this tread I've owned my 85 300d turbo less than 8 hours. Here's my novice question. After purchasing, I drove my car home which was about 150 miles. Car seemed to run fine at highway speed but when I got off the interstate it didn't seems as responsive as it had been when i started the trip. I stopped to fill up and had a somewhat difficult time removing the fuel filler cap. Seems a very strong vacuum had developed in the fuel tank. After removing the cap and releasing the vacuum the car seemed to run better. Should there be a vaccum in the tank? If not, any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated?

Thanks!
