Engine Light On, No Codes
1996 Mercedes 220's engine light is on and dealer tried to diagnose but couldn't find
anything wrong. Car won't pass inspection, and dealer says there are no codes showing.
We're stuck in the middle, anyone with any clues? Thanks.

Odd that the ECU would give out a false positive CEL, but then have no codes. It may be possible but doesn't sound right to me. If it were my car, I'd have the dealer clear all codes/memory which should turn off the CEL. If the original problem resurfaces, the light will come back onand fresh code should be captured.

Hi,
The light comes on for a reason!
Sometimes there is no code but I don't really understand why this occurs.
The key bit is model and vehicle/service history and why it fails inspection.
This will help point to what is wrong.
A dealer who shrugs their shoulders and states "don't know" whats wrong when the car has failed its inspection doesn't sound much good!
For instance was the carconnectedto STAR or just a DIY code scanner?
