Electrical System: Instrument Panel

Electrical System: Instrument Panel
I have a 200 E320 that I'm having instrument cluster malfunctions problems with. The problem is with the cluster are the gear selected, clock, and temperature display. The displays either have missing pixels or are completely not visible. The dealer is telling me that I have to change the complete instrument panel and the cost of not cheap. Help, does anyone know how to fix this problem. I know of other people that are having the same problem.

RE: Electrical System: Instrument Panel
Common MB problem.
Official repair is replacement but this involves having to recode the new pack which further adds to the cost.
Likewise if you use a pack from a salvage vehicle. System has checks to prevent speedo tampering!!
However, cause of problem is DIY repairable if you have the skills and are prepared to give it a go.
Basically remove pack (special tool from eBay). Disassemble casing and inspect ribbon cable to "gear selector / Clock display unit". Poor connection at this point is the problem. Pack with rubber etc to effect good join and all will be OK.
Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
Stuart.
