CLC 220 cdi Surging

Got a problem with a 2010 CLC 200cdi Automatic which I've just bought.
With a cold engine (temp gauge around 50). Low, constant throttle setting travelling 30-35 mph, the engine starts surging giving a mild kangaroo effect, the rev counter is cycling up and down by around 150rpm. It doesn't matter whic hgearbox mode I'm in, C, S or Manual (shows 3rd gear). Doesne't seem to be rpm dependent. I've seen the fault at 1500 to 2000 rpm.Problem isn't there when the engine's warm.
It's been back to the dealers once so far, and they 're-profiled' the gearbox, but no different. I'm sure it's not a gearbox problem.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thanks.
