Default C280 won't start

Great site guys, glad to be a member. Here is my problem,I have a 98 C280,yesterday I got stuck in the snow, took track control off,put it in low 1 got out went to put it in park, shifter wouldn't go past drive, wouldn't move.I took the shifter assembly out, took it apart, the dust cover broke, and was jambing it from going in park, put it bank together, now it wont crank. When I took the assembly out the car was in drive. When I took the shifting rod off the assemble,I put it in park.Is there some kind of sensor that has to be closed to complete the circuit, like a neutral safety switch. What it does,if you try to crank over the car,and you don't put your foot on the brake petal,it won't crank.Hope someone can help.Thanks.
