Bad strut on SL600

I recently purchased a 1998 SL600 with 27000 miles. I brought it to the dealer to be checked out. They told me the right front strut is bad and that they've never been successful changing just one strut, they have always had to do both fronts or both rears. They are telling me $1500 per strut! That seems a little excessive to me. I found struts at www.germanpartsonline.com for around $500 each. How much time does it take for a mechanic to change these? Any suggestions on what I should do? I really don't want to spend $3K for two struts.

That is very possible. It does sound high but not that high. Call another shop to see what they say. Most places use a program that gives them an approximation on how long it takes. Many times I've had the job take half as long as the program told me it was gonna take. So see what another shop says. Hope that helps.

Is the strut leaking? It is a little time comsuming. I dont know how much off the top of my head right know. I believe its around 2 hours. After they change the strut they have to bleed the system. It take like 40min to bleed the system but easy as hell. My shop has change just one many times. I would do just the one thats bad. Good luck
