92 300E Oil Viscosity/Consumption Questions
Hello! I just acquired my first Mercedes; a 1992 300E with 93,000 miles on the clock. My question is: What is the recommended oil viscosity for this engine? The previous owner has been using Mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 weight. I have noted some oil consumption, perhaps a quart every 1,000 miles. The cylinder head was reworked with new valve stem seals at mileage 79,000. Also, on cold start-up there is some chain rattle for a few seconds; should this be addressed?
Otherwise, the car runs and drives very well.
Thanks for any advice.

RE: 92 300E Oil Viscosity/Consumption Questions
Hey Nick, I have a 89 300 SE and depending on your climate you may want to go to a heavier weight oil. Mine has always been to the MB dealerships for all service and they put 20w50 Mobil 1 in it from day one. I have 175,000 and no oil consumption.

RE: 92 300E Oil Viscosity/Consumption Questions
Thanks for the feedback, Buck. I live in Seattle, Washington. The winter temperatures rarely fall below 32F, and the summer temperatures rarely rise above 80F.
Thanks for any additional advice.
