hey all i recently aquired a 85 mercedes 300d from a older couple they said if i can move it i can have it. turned out the ignition switch is just worn out and jamps up on the start position. anyways i have a fix for that question for all you mercedes techs is how hard is a engine rebuild? i have adjusted the valves and ran a compression test its just a worn out engine poorly maintained still runs great just lacks the get-up and go it should have. i figured the car lasted 23 years and 300,000 miles with poor service i can rebuild the car and just close to another 15-20 year out of it. good thing is the body has 0% rust pretty decent body shape theres just one dint where somone hit the door no big deal can be pulled out. interior is fixable dash is alittle cracked but i think i can refinish it no problem.
so is it even worth a rebuild? will i spend more time and money looking for special tools or are there very little special tools needed. i have found parts sources at a good price so parts wont be a issue. i do have experience rebuilding gas engines so i know somewhat what im getting myself into i just dont know what mercedes specials to expect once i tear it apart.
any input is welcomed
thanks!
