I have a '71 280SE with auto. trans. The accelerator linkage is stiff/hanging up. I have traced the problem to the pivot attached to a round plate that is attached to the right side of the engine block. I have used silicon lubricant on it but that doesn't help. I cannot find anything in the service manuals about the plate and what is behind it, if anything. Does anyone know what it covers? I am hesitant to remove it for cleaning, etc. without more information as I don't want springs and things flying out at me.
