616 intake manifold
Hi, I'm new here. Just in the process or removing a 616 from a '83 240D to install into my '31 model A. This particular engine has a rather large bulky intake manifold but I have seen others with a much smaller rather plain intake that I would rather use. The large one that I have has a butterfly in it that is activated by the throttle linkage, the other smaller ones don't appear to. Is there any reason why I can't get one of the smaller simpler intakes to use on my engine?.
Thanks FI. I think I will keep an eye out for the one in option "B". I seen one for sale on ebay from the UK but was a bit pricey. I wondered what the pressed in plug was for. I have always wanted to put one in a Model A and, they are the same length bell housing to fan as the original banger (27") but I will, have to relocate the oil filter housing. I also may have an issue with the oil pan interfereing with the tie rod. It seems that these will be the only three issues (the intake being the other) for making it fit nicely. I would LIKE to go to a simple spin on filter since I have to relocate anyway but am not sure about eliminateing the oil cooler. Seems like a pretty small, low HP engine to require one. There was also a black plastic gizmo on top of the valve cover that was actuated by the throttle linkage and ha a couple vacuum hoses to it. I assume it had something to do with the egr as well as it works in sync with the butterfly valve. I want to eliminate as much superfluous stuff as possible and keep the engine as clean and simple as possible, ore in keeping with the model A it's going in.
This is what you need for the oil filter: A-MB107 Oil Filter Adapter Kit for OM617
Or you can just move the stock housing: A-MB108 Oil Filter Re-Location Kit for OM617
The oil cooler is not absolutely necessary on that engine since it does not have piston cooling nozzles. An option is to use a VW oil cooler, which will get you your spin-on filter and you can tie the cooler into the heater circuit.
