Default 380SL Pistons

Okay everyone, don't tar and feather me for asking this but I'm just curious. I'm a Mercedes owner from way back and currently own 3 (300TD, 500SEC & 380SL). I love everything about the car but the cost of the parts. Especially when I compare the prices to what I pay to repair my 68 El Camino or Ford F350 pick-up.

Right now my husband is pulling the engine on the 380SL and preparing to rebuild it. The bone of contention on this is the cost of the pistons. $1400! That's absolutely insane. I know, I know, it's "German Engineering".....but really. My question is, "Has anyone out there modified or had modified pistons that were not Mercedes and installed them in their car for less? If so how successful was it?

Just a little background on us. We've been restoring 356's for 35 years plus numerous other cars such as 68 Maibu, 68 El Camino, 59 Ford Retractable, a multitude of Mercedes, Porsche 944, etc. So....we're not babes in the woods when it comes to ripping apart and putting back together anything German or American. We just sometimes get a bit frustrated with the monopoly Mercedes has on it's parts and their market prices.

Thanks for letting me pick your brains and experience your creativity!

Patti

For a DIY job, $1,400 is cheap, very cheap, a dealer would probably charge you twice or more for the same job. Be thankful you have a "hand" hubby. He is saving a lot of money doing not one of the easiest automotive jobs there is.

I agree sleepwalker, A piston for my boxer engine, Porsche 911 Carrera cost $750 which included the rings, so they are getting away at, as you say fair price.

Keep in mind though that the 380 engine has alloy bores. If they are to be machined, don't just get anyone to do it.
