Can I please have some feedback on the cylinder head casting numbers. I have a 1986 300 SDL 6 cylinder Turbo Diesel W126. It has a cracked cylinder head ( never overheated , just started pressurizing the cooling system ). I have heard talk about there being an early and late casting. ??? I heard that the early castings had this problem....but late castings " Resolved " this ???
I have had my head welded and re-pressured checked, still have a leak. I do not want to assemble this car and feel like it is a band-aid and never be able to rely on it. My daughter has a 1987 300 TD wagon with I believe the same engine. I have heard conflicting opinions about these cars. They both have over 300,000 miles. One opinion is ...these are GREAT cars, and if cared for run really high miles ( 700,000 was told ?? ). Another opinion is, it is the 5 cylinder motors that are the GOOD ones, not so with the 6 cylinders ?? Really appreciate some advice and real world experiences. THANK YOU !!
