Default 240D Trany ?

I have a 1982 240D and have a problem with the transmission. I cannot get 3rd or 4th geer. I have gone as far as to disconnect the linkage from the shift lever at the transmission. That lever doen't seem to be attached to anything inside the trany. It will swing all the way forward to the housing and all the way to the rear with no resistence, clicks, or anything to give the impression that it is attached to anything inside the trany. Do you guys have any thoughts on this?
Also if I have to look for a replacement, what year models will work or interchange with an 82 240D?

Default 3rd n 4th

From what I can tell there is a lever for reverse, a lever for 1st and 2nd and a third lever for 3rd and 4th. That Is the one I disconnected and that is the one that doesn't seem to be attached or controlling anything inside the trany.

That's a good question. It does not seem to be secure on the shaft. With a flashlight and a mirror I can see that the lever does not turn the allen head bolt thats in the center of the lever but I don't know if it's supposed to either.

Thanks for the comments. Anyone know what year model tranys will fit the 1982? I have located a 1977 parts car but I don't know if that will work.
