Exclamation 2006 C230's Battery Explosion

Went to ACE Hardware to buy some tools. I start the car and as soon as I turned the key in the ignition, I and everybody hear a very loud explosion that sounds like a shotgun (stopped at the bank prior and I can imagine someone calling the police reporting a possible robbery if this had happened there, or while going 80MPH on the highway ). I panic because it came from my car. I tried turning the key but it wouldn't turn; everything was dead. I opened the hood and saw smoke vapors from the back of the battery; the whole back cover was torn open. A kind veteran who happened to be at ACE offered to drop me off at my home. Gathered more money then my wife and I went to Auto Zone and bought a new battery. Upon replacing, everything was back to normal. I bought the car new in 2006 and for 11 years the battery was fine until this certain day.

My first and hopefully my last scary experience.

Wow! Glad that no one was hurt and that everything worked out. What kind of battery was it, so we know what not to buy?

I don't recall the brand, but it was the OEM when I purchased and drove off the dealership. Eleven years is a long time so that battery was pure quality.

I now have the Duralast Gold Battery I had installed last week. I hope nothing like this happens to you.
