1999 E-300 (diesel) Excessive Belt Noise
I have been fighting this problem for a while. There is excessive belt noise that is severe enough that you hear it over the engine. It seemed to start when I replaced the drive belt one year ago. In the last year I have replaced the Spring tensioner (which broke about a month after the new belt was put on) , The Shock and the pivot arm at different times. I was so fed up with the noise which gets progressivly worse over time, that I just now replaced everything at the same time (new belt, new Spring, new shock and new pivot arm. I can still hear belt noise over the engine inside the car with the hood closed and the door closed. There is maybe a 1/4" of play in the belt. This problem is driving me nuts! The dealers (more then one I have tried) can't seem to fix this problem. By the way, after one year the belt was already needing replacement because of the vibration (about 15,000 miles of driving). It had a couple of cracks in it. The dealers say the motor mounts are fine. This car has 135,000 miles on it and is in impeccable shape otherwise. Do you have any ideas?
Thank you VERY much!

I know this sounds dumb but try getting another belt. That could be the source of ur problem. I am not real familiar with that motor but does it have a fan clutch cause. I had a problem that the bearing in my fan clutch when dad on my isuzu rodeo and i didnt know it did and i went through two fan brackets b4 i realized it. So my new motto since has been look at the cheaper or less advanced componts first cause they seem to go first.
