1990 Under Hood Sound Absorbing Foam Perishing
My 1990 R129 500SL has a foam plastic/rubber material glued to the inside of the hood/bonnet. This once would have absorbed engine noise, but now just leaves sticky residue all over the motor. I was about to scrape what was left off the inside of the hood/bonnet and hopefully find some solvent to remove the glue.
Should I bother replacing the sound deadening foam? Is there a non-genuine cost effective alternative?
Thanks in advance

To my understanding the hood pad works for noise reduction, but mostly to keep the engineīs heat off the paint on the hood.
I recently replaced mine and itīs a simple job - scape as much of the old pad off with a hard plastic brush, dont worry about whats left, applied rubber cement glue (for shoe repair) with a paint brush on the underside of the hood and the pad gradually - starting from the back (near windshield) towards the front end. Was done in 1 hr. and left the hood open for another couple of hours while the stuff dried. I did have the help of one other person and donīt recomend you do this by yourself. Also wear masks to protect you from the glue fumes or (as I did) take various, quick breaks between applications.
Good luck.

Whatever itīs main purpose is, in my car the appearance under the hood changed dramatically with the new pad on and I figure it takes the risk out of the hood being overheated and even the battery terminals touching metal and causing a problem. Worth the $$ in my opinion.
