When I run the car after a while and especially after I turn it off I can smell strong gas fumes. as well as sometimes going down the road. Any ideas?

Hi jcmurp,

These cars did not come with a very good fuel tank in my opinion. Make sure the fuel tank is not rusting through near thelower fitting. Don't let the rubber coating fool you; the thing could be very rusty and full of small holes under the coating. Besides that, check for loose fuel fittings and hoses, of course.

Did not notice any smoke. And as for the gas tank,The previous owner said that he had the tank repaired because it was leaking. After thy fixed it,it still leaked so he took it back and they coated the inside with a red substance to seal it better.Any idea what that might be? adn the car idles low around 500rpm's without air and around 450rpm with air on. It is hesitant to take off when it is cold after staring it and pressing the gas it seems to bog down first. No idiot lights on but does seem to burn more gas then I think it should.Does it have a pvc and where, could that cause some problem.
any ideas appreciated

Thinking back now,After the car idles a while if pressing the gas to rev the engine it does let out a little "white" smoke and the temperature runs around or between 80c and the next line above that (I assume to be 100c) is that normal? temperature wise?
thanks

white smoke, it means there is a problem with the head gasket.
