Thoughts on 1980 240D
Hello, all.
I am considering looking at this vehicle as a "spare" to my 300SD. http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/912358962.html. Has ~320K miles and was "completely overhauled" 80K ago.
Am in the process of getting more info from the seller about what this meant, and questioned him about the AC, last time valves adjusted, etc.
I'm thinking his asking price of $2700 is steep, even if everything checks out OK.
Any thoughts as to what main items I should be concerned about with a 240D of that year, and is $2700 a reasonable price???
Thanks in advance. Don

i have the same one, mines at 265k
picked mine up for 500$
look for blowby-while running remove the oil filler cap and note the positive or negative pressure at different rpms,
how in depth of an overhaul was it? pretty sure theres a mercedes million mile club for diesels

That's a LOT of money for a 1980 with that many miles. The paint job better be good, check for leaks and rust (pull the carpets up and check the trunk
I just spent a GRAND overhauling the front suspension on my cream puff 1984 300D at 219,000
The ball joints etc are sealed and the rubbers go bad. Check the brakes too.
I bought a 1982 240D with less than 100K (and a lousy paint job) on it for my kid for a grand and haven't had to do much to it
good luck

Did you get a new paint job on the car? Less then 100k is hard to find. I have been looking to sell my 420SEL for a Diesel. Im thinking a 300TD or a 350SD.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like I could probably do better elsewhere... Claims AC was working this past summer, but needs refresh... Timing chain apparently snapped, requiring the "overhaul". Don

I dropped the idea of the 1980 model, but I found this 1983:

Feedback as to whether this may be something to follow up on???
Thanks

Thanks. I know he's asking $2000, and I was going to offer much lower to begin. But he's over 500 miles away from me, which makes for a logistical nightmare...
Oh, well, guess I'll continue to keep my eyes open for a better one, and put some money into my 300SD for now...
