Relace the air filter, and keep those rpms below 3000. I saw this program about these guys that practice hyper mileage (least thats what I think they called it). They ran a test with the host driving agressively to his destination vs. hanging in the slow speed lane. Wouldn't you know it, slow and steady won the race. I'm guessing you think there is a problem though. Maybe you didn't use the full gallon.

driving habits effect mpg big time....
65-70 mpg should produce best results,
fuel, air filters very important ! change mine on my gmc dmax diesel every 10k. runs about 17mpg.

Weight is the enemy of high mileage in a Mercedes-Benz. Don't get me wrong, heft and build quality is the very attribute most of us love about our cars. When you look at a diesel passenger car that achieves 40+ mpg you will see that it is much lighter and also that it contains newer more efficient engine technology like TDI or CDIfor example. The combined effect of lighter weight, modern aerodynamics and a freshefficient engine will give you high mpg.

Does anyone remember the VW that achieved 80 mpg in testing in the 1980's? If memory serves, it was a specially outfitted Rabbit or Golf with a 1L diesel engine, maybe even an earlyTDI variant. The guy who drove it was a specialist at achieving high mileage through special shifting/gliding techniques, and the car was crazy lightweight.

More recently, the VW "1 Litre Car"which is a single-cylinder 8.5HP .3L SDI engine uses no more fuel than 1L per 100Km. Low weight and advanced aerodynamics contribute greatly to the great fuel efficiency of this car.

I've got a solid 20mpg on the 300CD turbo. I'm hoping that once it warms up and I'm more inclined to do the valve adjustment and other maintenance that I'm sure has been neglected for the last decade, it will improve.

If it's causing a lot of motion altering friction then possibly at lower speeds. More then likely not though. How is your current suspension on the car? If you plan to repair or change suspension components you might want to look for a lowering kit. Less drag from sitting up 1-1.5 inches higher would affect mpg
