Default Help! My 300D became the exxon valdez!

I gave ol' Hercules (1985, w123) an oil change today. I am not the most experienced mechanic but I've done a few oil changes and other stuff without a problem until today. Today I lost one of the gaskets that fastens the lid onto the oil filter. Made a mental note not to start the car until I replaced it, then continued on filling it with new oil. So, then I wanted to make sure I had enough oil in there and without thinking, I started it to let the filter absorb some, so I could add more. DUH!! Quickly my car became a squirting geyser of oil.

I shut it off but there was oil every where. I cleaned it up with 50 pounds of kitty litter, went to the store to buy more oil and a gasket. Tried the whole thing over again, even took the lid completely off to make sure the brand new O ring was in place. Started it again and oil was still leaking from my filter canister. At this point, its pitch black outside and I had a light, but it looked like the oil was leaking from the BOTTOM. I could be wrong... but I had my eye close on the lid and seal and didn't see it coming from there. It was too dark, too late, and too oily for me to crawl under and see if I could take a look.

But I was hoping somebody on here would have any advice for me in the mean time?? Thanks in advance!

I wish. Unfortunately, I actually saw it streaming off of the canister onto the fresh litter when I started it the second time.

So how did you resolve this? Did you just end up getting another ring/gasket for it? How did you keep it secure this time?

I remember once I had my oil filter gasket pinched, instead of fully seated. Boy a 300D can pump out a lot of oil on the ground fast
