81' 300cd charging system question
following tech guidance given... started engine conduct volt meter test at the battery, reading: 14.0v
Turn on everything electrical, lights high beams, ac full blower, radio.
test at battery, read: 12.0v... rev'd the engine, tested again and the same, 12.0v.
Do I need a new voltage regulator or new regulator and alternator?
Thanks.

I would clean all of the Electrical Connectors including the Ground Strap that on mine is about where my Feet are on the Drivers side under the car.
[Other Stuff: The Electrical Connector at the Alternator can also get corroded inside.
The 2 fat Red wires with their wide Slots should always get Battery Voltage. The single short Slot fed by the Blue Wire goes to the Battery Charging Light and only gets Voltage when the Ignition Switch is on.
If the Battery Charging Light Bulb burns out your Alternator will not charge.]
What many have done in your situation is to buy the new Voltage Regulator and if that does not work remove the New Regulator and keep it in the Glove Compartment for later. And, get another Alternator.
Also if the Battery itself is old that could cause the same thing. Try the same test with a barrowed Battery or get take your Battery to a parts place that will load test it for free (the Battery needs to be charged before they can load test it).
