'80-'82 240D interchangable engines?
Hi guys.
Great Forum, with plenty of useful information. If it's ok with the administrators of this thread, I would like to open a new thread about the 240D series.
I’m big fan of the 200 diesel series, and I've owned quite a few through the years. However, I'm not much of a mechanic, although the 200-240 seems pretty easy to work on. With that said I'm never afraid to get my hands dirty or expand my horizon.
Well, about 2 years ago I wanted a project car, and went a bought this 1980 240D. The owner had attempted to change the timing chain (Don't ask me why) and was unable to finish the work, so I bought the car "AS IS", thinking I can hire someone to finish the job. Shortly after, I came across, this 1983 rebuilt motor with 42K miles on for $150, and purchased that instead of fixing the one that was in the car. My idea was to swap it out, and be done with it. Well my mechanic, did the "swapping" however he messed something up, or didn't adjust the gas pedal cable, or the vacuum line...(Something along those lines) where the car wont shift out of the second gear...The car will start, it will drive, but it won’t shift out of the second gear (Automatic Transmission).
Based on my previous experience (82 240D), when I changed the valve cover gasket, it gave me the same issue...I adjusted the cable, and it started shifting fine...
The problem I'm coming across with this one, is that the black box that seats in top of the motor, is not there...and some of the vacuum lines, seem out of place....
I "stole" some pic from Google to illustrate what I mean...tomorrow or day after, I will take pictures of my actual car and post them in here
Long story short, the car has been sitting for approx. 2 years, and now I'm going to try and put it to work. After I get it to run as it’s supposed to, I'll fix the rust spots and paint the whole car...but first thing first, I would like some help to get this car running the way is supposed to...if at all possible...
First Pic shows the 80 original motor,
The second, the 83,
The third the black vacuum tranny box...
The difference that I'm noticing between the two, is that the 80 has a bracket on the top of the engine, where the lines connect to. Where the 83 has the black box...
The glow plugs, heat shields, primer pump, oil / fuel filter, are new...I’m planning on dumping the fuel that is on the tank, and filling it with some new one...
What do I do next? Can I do any modifications to it, or not? Do you guys have any pic that can help me understand it better?
Thank in advance ....
