Default 300D vacuum pump

i was driving my 78 300D from salt lake city to LA and when i got to St. Gorge ut i noticed my breaks were hard to push and when i stopped for fuel i had to turn off the engine by pushing backward on the throttle. i have no vacuum at all.
what is or are the most common failures of the vacuum pump?
im thinking its the diaphragm.
also does anyone know a place in LA where i could get the parts i need on a sunday

rebuild it yourself..it is the least expensive way.used is a gamble as it mite be as old and worn as yours was.

how do you get to the diaphragm? i removed the 8 screws that hold down what i would think is the cover for the diaphragm but it wont move. im hoping i dont have to take the whole pump off the engine case.
