Default 1992 300 SD and white smoke....

I just bought a beautiful 1992 300SD that I knew needed some work; My mechanic is wonderful and gave it a once over including new valve stem guids, timing chain, and new rings. It runs WONDERFULLY- plenty of power, quiet and does not burn oil. The one issue I have is that OCCASIONALLY, when idling (at abround 600 RPM) it billows out white smoke (not blue, not black). It does not do this when the engine is turning >1000 RPM, and SOMETIMES does not do it EVEN when idling lower. Also, I find that if I accelerate fast and engage the TURBO, it will occcasionally leave abillow of white smoke behind me. Does anyone have any idea about what the issue is? Is it a feature? I am new to the world of diesels and bought it to run biodiesel. Ger

Ger, It is an indication that water is entering a cylinder and leaving as steam. Bad head gasket, cracked head etc. Check your water level. It may only happen at a certain temperature as things expand...... for now. You may see bubbles or expansion of water when running as cylinders can push air to water system. Could be a warped head due to previous high heatnot sealing right. Also the high heat could be why it needed rings. samiel
