<FONT size=2>you should replace thefan on/off coolant senor switch on the top of the engine. buy a dealership part to replace this as it should only cost around £13 as mine did. if this still doesent stop the overheating then the only other problem could be the actual electromagnetic fan coupling itself. this is a very expensive part so get somebody who knows about car electrics to test it before you buy another coupling. also the fan should come on only at 100degres which may seem like overheating but in merc terms its perfectly okay for them to run around this temperature. so dont worry if your car seems to be overheating as its only doing so if theneedle is at the very top of the gauge.</FONT></P>

<FONT size=2>finally if you do need parts go to a MB dealership only as secendrate cheaper parts as they are only just that, and the few pounds you save buying them could eventually and allways does lead to sometimes huge repair bills</FONT></P>

Is it a 2.3 or 2.6 engine?

I'm getting a similar overheating problem (which is driving me nuts) with my 1988 190E.</P>

I only ever get a problem if I've been running the car for around an hour, at which point running idle becomes a problem. The temperature climbs, and keeps going - the radiator blew a couple of weeks ago (since replaced), which is going to happen again unless I find out what is going on.</P>

One thing that I think is related is that when the temp is &gt; 100, I hear a clunking/belt slipping type sound from the engine when pulling away in 1st - only hear in 1st tho.</P>

Is there a link between temperature control and the clutch at high temperatures? Has anyone had this problem before or heard anything like this sound?</P>

Any help or pointers would be most appreciated. Only 100K on it.</P>

I have a 1987 w124 200 and it has been recently overheating too. at 100 degres there is a switch witch comes on, this basically magnitises the fan pully bringing on the fan. this does indeed make a clunk and then a whoshing noise of the fan especially when revving and pulling off (this stops in about 1 min as the temperature gauge will drop quickly to about 80 degrees then gradually crawl up to 100 agian in a cycle.). it sounds as though the fan belt is worn out so replace it and the system should work fine. (there is a specic procedure etc for replacing merc fan belts so reply and i will tell you if neccisary.) i can explain more about testing the system etc as i have obtianed dealership notes on the mercedes cooling system in great detial, but am tired of time wasters who send in a request and do not reply like arlo apparantly.

Thanks for the reply - most appreciated. If it is merely the fan belt then that's good news. It's worth a shot. My local garage seem pretty clueless on the 190E, so if can give me details of the procedure I can pass it on to them, and anything else which they could do with knowing about the cooling system.</P>

I would take it somewhere else but I depend on the car too much and the local garage is just down the road from my day job - very convenient (when they know what they're doing of course).</P>

Any idea on the going rate for a Merc 190 fan belt?</P>

Thanks again!</P>

A fan belt will cost about a tenner, but my advise is to ask for a 'gates' brand belt at your local autopart store. you must tell them if the car has air con or not, or you may give the mechanic the wrong belt. These instructions must be printed and shown to the mechanic as follows. There is a large 19mm bolt going through the belt tensioning device, undo this first. Then you will see a tube about four inches long with a nut on top. undo this nut and ensure that you are in fact loosining it the correct way. This will slacken the belt. remove belt and replace with new one, and carefully tighten as follows. On the front of the tensioning device you will see a small pointer, there is a sticker on the tensioner marked at various intervals. Turn the adjuster clockwise until, without power steering pointer is aligned with fifth div mark, with power steering seventh div mark.

would be happy to describe the cooling system in further detial if you wish as i have got full dealership diagrams etc on it but in your case i dont think its neccisary

My last Benz was an '89 190E 2.6 which was always overheating! To make a long story short, I added Redline Water Wetter which helped some, then installed a switch under the front panel that bypassed the temperature sensor on the engine. Whenever the heat gage got high, I would flip the switch and "presto" like magic the temp would drop. Didn't know what else to do! Good luck!
