Looking to buy 82 300D Turbo...CA Emission Question.
Hello all,
I am wondering if there are any quick characteristics to look for under the hood or on the door tag to tell if a car is set up for California emissions? All the pictures of under the hood on these 300D's (life long Cali cars vs. federal) look the same...i know the air filter is differently shaped, but the filter housing seems to be the same on both as well. Please help. The car i am interested in is located here:
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...366609540.html
What do you guys think of the price?
Thanks!!

Ok, so forgive my cluelessness, but it sounds like a good thing that the intake and exhaust have been changed?? I am going to look at it tonight and will find out more... what should the VIN start with? this may not be an 82 for all i know. ...is $3,000 reasonable to spend if it drives nice?
Thanks
Thanks

Drove the car tonight and have some more questions/comments:
VIN# WDBA833A1CB012976 does this sound right for an 82 300D Turbo?
It shakes pretty good at idle and at the top of the rpm band just before it shifts, but is smooth at speed. i'm thinking it might be motor mounts. otherwise it sounds good i guess...(like a beat to hell duramax)
It shifts hard between first and second gear especially when cold, but then softens up a bit when warm.
I don't know when the fuel filter/air filter ect. were last changed, but the fuel filter looked older than dirt.
The throttle response on the highway is great! it is pretty stable at 55-65 too.
The tach doesn't work, which sucks because i wanted to see where it was idling/shifting.
Everything else works on the car except the A/C and the body is nearly as perfect as a completely original 1982 body can be. there are some bumps and bruises here and there, but there was no rust that i could see. (i was pretty amazed at that)
This was the first MB Diesel I have ever driven, it's a year newer than I am and as far as i can tell in really good shape. i have to say i am pretty impressed!
What can you guys tell me about the general descriptions i gave above? is there anything glaring??
The guy wants $3500 for it, but i'll offer $2750 if it checks out at the mechanic and go from there...does that sound reasonable?
Thanks in advance for the response!!

Thanks Forced,
Actual VIN: WDBAB33A1CB012976
The car is now on ebay too... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1982-...=p4506.c0.m245
it's a no reserve auction, but the guy started it at $3400, and now i guess it has a newer engine in it!?!? yesterday when i drove the car the seller said NOTHING about it not being the original engine... not sure what to make of this.
The car is pretty cool, but i'll wait to do anything until the aution ends.
